The Philippine Basketball Association has suspended referee Jeff Tantay for failing to call a foul in the final seconds of the Philippine Cup semifinals between TNT and Meralco.
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial pointed to the lay-up attempt of CJ Cansino in Meralco’s final possession, where a foul should have been called against Calvin Oftana. It is not yet clear how long Tantay's suspension will be.
Meralco lost the game, 99-96, in Game 5 of the semifinals to bow out of contention in the conference with TNT winning the series, 4-1.
Meralco coach Luigi Trillo also rued the non-call, although he also gave credit to TNT for pulling off the victory, where the Tropang 5G overhauled a five-point deficit on a four-point shot by Rey Nambatac and a steal and lay-up by Jordan Heading.
“They said they were going to suspend the referee, I heard, from our governor (William Pamintuan). But what’s that going to do? It’s already said and done. It’s not the first time it’s happened (a referee being suspended). It’s the second time," Trillo said.
“We’ve got to make the right call. A non-call is not the right call, and it’s the second time it’s happened, this conference.”
